Cool OS X Programs

December 2, 2007 xtacocorex Leave a comment

I think I’ve done an interesting finds post already; so here goes my list of cool OS X stuff, some I’ve found while sitting at the hospital and others I’ve had for a while.

Monolingual is an awesome program that srubbs Mac applications for non needed language sets. By doing this you free up tons of disk space. It defaults to removing everything but English (I could be wrong, it might use what is set for your language on the OS). It provides no harm to the system or the application and I’ve been using it for quite a while now with no ill effects.

Shiira is a new web browser from Japan for OS X that is very similar to Safari wth some cool things built in like Expose’ for your tabs and built in page thumbnail support (Safari needs the Safari Stand SIMBL plugin). I’ve been using it for a day and I really like it; fast like Safari and has the Safari feel and well integrated with the OS.

Wallpaper Clocks is a program that places a clock on your desktop and updates every minute. I found it this morning following links from Musings from Mars, but don’t ask me how to recreate the search since I can’t remember. The one thing I haven’t figured out is how to remove my original background, but the background I had goes well with the clock theme I’ve decided to run.

Update: 12/03/2007

I downloaded Nocturne just before noon today and have found that it will probably be the coolest program I use at night while in dimly lit areas. Nocturne comes from the same group that does Quicksilver and Visor (a SIMBL plugin that creates a Quake-like dropping terminal window).

XP faster than Vista!? Who didn’t know…

In a news brief on CNet, a study group tested the new service packs for Windows Vista and XP and came to the [obvious] conclusion that XP is faster.  Next to Windows 2000, XP is their second best OS and with half the bloat of Vista, it should scream on the newest generation of computers.

The exciting thing is that Erica has expressed no interest in upgrading to Vista.

Helicopters!

Safari 3 on my Mac, which was just updated in the latest set of updates, likes to crash occasionally.  This is the reason why I uninstalled the Beta that was released a while ago.

The Air Hog Havoc Heli is awesome, especially after the Black Friday sale at Target allowing me to obtain this awesomeness for only $15. So awesome in fact, that Sean flew it more than I did when we got to Nebraska and I was able to play with it. I sort of forced him to get one and he stepped it up and got the Air Hog Havoc Heli Laser Battle set.

The countdown to the kid has begun, six weeks left. We’ve gotten a lot more stuff including a changing pad thing which is, from the look of it, foam. Sean gave me a bag used to hold claymore mines that I could use as a diaper bag. Not going to lie, but stuff is cool. The stroller will be here Friday and the thinking of how to modify it will begin.
