DIY Flash Diffusers

I’ve been reading a lot of Strobist lately and have decided to try off camera lighing. In preparation for attempts with the flashes I have, I decided to build a diffuser. I wanted to do something similar to Nick Wheeler on flickr, as seen here so I went to the local Michaels to find translucent take out boxes. They had some, but I found some Creative Hands Cool Foam from a company called Fibre Craft. I picked up a sheet of white for $0.79 before tax that is 30cm x 45cm x .02cm.

After taking quite a few measurements on two of my three flashes, I determined that if I had a 3in x 1.5in opening for the flash head, I could fit, well the two that I measured; the third flash will have to sit on the sidelines.

When I get Erica’s Sony point and shoot back, I’ll be able to take some pictures to show the template, how I folded it and the final cut piece of foam assembled.

Since I let Erica use the Sunpak flash, the foam diffuser is a little large for my Quantaray, so I went back to Michaels and picked up two small translucent take out boxes. I gave one to Erica as a present since I figured she would like that and decided to use the other as a diffuser just like Mr. Wheeler. My build for the take out diffuser is identical to his, so I won’t show a detailed build process, but will show the completed unit when I get around to trying out product shots.
